Who We Are
Mission: To share the power of learning to transform lives and enrich the community.
Fox Valley Literacy was founded in Appleton, Wisconsin in September 1990, during International Literacy Month. The Outagamie Waupaca Library System, which supports public libraries in the area, along with the Appleton Public Library led the formation of the organization in order to bring together existing programs as the Fox Valley Literacy Coalition.
In the 30 years since our founding, we’ve undergone two name changes and moved offices several times. But our dedication to providing quality and accessible adult education hasn’t changed. Since 1990, we have served students at no cost, all with the help of our dedicated tutors. We continue to work hard every day to serve our community and to share the power of learning.
What We Do
We pair students with volunteer tutors for one-on-one lessons. Our services are provided to students free of charge, and we provide the training for our volunteers. Students’ lives are enhanced by literacy through the ability to read, achieve educational goals, improve employment skills, and participate in civic engagement. Fox Valley Literacy provides a great opportunity for volunteers to build connections that improve the lives of individuals and strengthen our community.
Our learners are adults. Some of them have jobs and others are looking for a job. Some have had an education, while others have not had this opportunity. They might be single or married; they might be parents or grandparents. Some were born and raised right here in the Fox Valley, while others are from countries around the world.
