Description

Save lives and prevent injury by providing leadership and/or support to Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) team members by supporting the Prepare with Pedro program. The 30-45-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades K-2 (ages 4-7) in school classrooms and other settings by following Pedro the Penguin as he learns how to be prepared and take action during an emergency. Team member roles include either being a presenter, presentation assistant, administrative support, or presenter trainer.

Team member roles include either being a presenter, presentation assistant, administrative support, or presenter trainer. Each volunteer is able to choose their preferred role and responsibilities will vary with each role.

Presenter Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct Prepare with Pedro presentations given to youth in schools and community settings
  2. Successfully complete the Basic Instructor Fundamentals for Youth, Module 1, Module 2 teach-back, and Module 3 assessment
  3. May assist with community outreach to schedule presentations at sites (optional)
  4. May assist in reaching key groups within the region, such as support to military families, at risk youth, etc. (optional)
  5. May mentor new presenters to help the region build a team of experienced youth preparedness presenters. (optional)
  6. Work as a team with the Team Lead and other volunteers and employees to build Prepare with Pedro in the region
  7. Ensure all reporting data for each presentation given is collected and given to regional staff in a timely manner
  8. Other duties as agreed to between the presenter and the Team Lead

Presentation Assistant Responsibilities:

  1. Support Prepare with Pedro Presenter in schools and community settings while they deliver the presentation.
  2. Handing out and collecting materials from students; helping with classroom management; grading quizzes; working with individual students during the activities; assisting with other duties as requested by the presenter.
  3. May be asked to help complete the reports for the presentation site(s).
  4. Successfully complete any Curriculum-Specific Courses
  5. May assist with community outreach to schedule presentations at sites (optional).
  6. May assist in reaching key groups within the region, such as support to military families, at risk youth, etc. (optional).
  7. May mentor new presentation assistants to help the region build a team of experienced youth preparedness volunteers (optional).
  8. Work as a team with the Team Lead and other volunteers and employees to build Prepare with Pedro in the region.
  9. Other duties as agreed to with the presenter and the Team Lead.

Administrative Support Responsibilities:

  1. Providing EDGE Learning Management System administrative support (where possible)
  2. Printing of program training materials
  3. Training site support (scheduling training room reservations, coordinating with Presenters and Team Lead, etc.)
  4. Working with Prepare with Pedro Presenter/Presentation Assistant to coordinate materials pick up/drop off
  5. Helping with site outreach to secure presentations
  6. Carry out administrative duties, such as:
    1. Data management
    2. Inventory management
    3. Reporting collection and entry
    4. Collecting and readying presentation supplies
    5. Responding to email inquiries about the program

Presenter Trainer Role Responsibilities:

  1. Successfully complete the Basic Instructor Fundamentals for Youth, Prepare with Pedro Fundamentals Part 1 and Prepare with Pedro Fundamentals Part 2 teach-back
  2. Present program to student audiences
  3. Attend any additional training required as specified by the Team Lead
  4. Plan and lead Presenter Trainings using National Headquarters (NHQ) developed resources
  5. Responsible for training individuals to present Prepare with Pedro curriculum proficiently

Qualifications:

Team member roles include either being a presenter, presentation assistant, administrative support, or presenter trainer. The qualifications will vary depending on the role. All team members are required to be:

  • Enthusiastic about the American Red Cross mission and programs
  • Demonstrate respect and recognition of the role and the responsibilities of others
  • Highly collaborative
  • Communicates effectively both in writing and verbally
  • Interest in expanding Red Cross capabilities through teaching and empowering others
  • Reliable and punctual, with good time management skills
  • Must be able to meet all background check requirements imposed by local school jurisdictions
  • Completion of all required trainings

Presenter Qualifications:

  • Comfortable presenting an interactive curriculum to youth in grades K-2 in school and out of school/community settings
  • Working knowledge of emergency preparedness, including protective actions for various hazards, or a strong desire to learn about emergency preparedness and protective actions in order to teach them to youth
  • Flexible and willingness to teach new ideas and concepts, such as the psychosocial "coping skills"
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through with minimum supervision
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking
  • Dynamic personality that relates well to youth in the target age group
  • Ability to complete reports and conduct follow up calls with sites in a timely manner
  • Ability to problem solve and be flexible with program changes, regional changes, etc.
  • Daytime and/or weekend availability
  • Ability to arrange transportation to the Red Cross office to pick up materials, travel to event location, and return materials, etc. to the office at the end of the presentation

Presentation Assistant Qualifications:

  • Comfortable in classroom or group settings talking to and interacting with youth in grades K-2
  • Familiar with or a strong desire to learn about emergency preparedness and protective actions
  • Willing to learn program activities such as the coping skills, etc. in case there is a need to demonstrate technique to kids
  • Dynamic personality that relates well to youth in the target age group
  • Ability to complete reports and conduct follow up calls with sites in a timely manner (if required by region)
  • Ability to problem solve and be flexible with program changes, regional changes, etc.
  • Daytime and/or weekend availability
  • Ability to arrange transportation to the Red Cross office to pick up materials, travel to event location, and return materials, etc. to the office at the end of the presentation

Administrative Support Qualifications:

  • Ability and interest in mentoring new team members and leaders
  • Fluency in basic computer skills and adaptable to new systems

Presenter Trainer Qualifications:

  • Comfortable presenting and explaining an interactive curriculum to adults preparing to present to youth in grades K-2
  • Working knowledge of emergency preparedness, including protective actions for various hazards, or a strong desire to learn about emergency preparedness and protective actions in order to teach them to youth
  • Flexible and willingness to teach new ideas and concepts, such as the psychosocial "coping skills"
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through with minimum supervision
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking
  • Dynamic personality that relates well to adults of varying ages
  • Ability to complete reports
  • Ability to problem solve and be flexible with program changes, regional changes, etc.
  • Daytime and/or weekend availability
  • Ability to arrange transportation to the Red Cross office to pick up materials, travel to event location, and return materials, etc. to the office at the end of the training
